Our first stop is in the Jianghua Yao autonomous county (a special administrative area in China for the Yao ethnic group) in Hunan province. Have you ever seen a dragon dance? Well, the people in Jianghua have just hosted a dragon-lion lantern festival that was absolutely spectacular. This grand event was part of the celebrations for the county’s 70th anniversary. It was a huge party! Seventy different teams gathered in a park square to show off their amazing skills. Performers came from all over, and their ages were incredible, ranging from just 9 years old all the way to 85 years old. That means kids, parents, and even great-grandparents were all performing together!
Now, let’s talk about the stars of the show: the dragons. One team, from a place called Shengang village, presented an unbelievable 200-meter-long dragon. To help you understand how long that is, let’s do some math. A standard basketball court is about 28 meters long. This dragon was as long as seven basketball courts placed end to end! Can you imagine trying to make a creature that huge dance and move? It had 77 separate sections, all moving together in beautiful, intricate/complex patterns.
Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine you are standing in that crowded square. You can hear the powerful, booming beat of the drums, and you feel the rhythm in your chest. The air is buzzing with excited cheers from thousands of people. Suddenly, you see it. A colossal, glittering dragon snakes its way through the crowd. Its body is a rainbow of brilliant colors, shining under the festival lights. It’s so long you can’t see the end of it. And this wasn’t the only amazing sight. Another multicolored dragon was so enormous that it took 1,000 performers to maneuver/control it! That’s like the entire student body of a large school working together to make one piece of art come alive.
After the main show, the performers didn’t just go home. They took their fantastic dragons and lions on a parade through the main streets of the county. They wanted to spread the happy and festive spirit to everyone. This wonderful tradition is recognized as an important part of their culture, an intangible cultural heritage, which means it’s a special tradition passed down through generations. Today, more than 300 active troupes are keeping this amazing art form alive. It has become a symbol of unity and community. From the noisy and colorful festival, our second story takes us to a much quieter, but equally magical, place. We are heading into the office of Sun Yingbao, who is a botanical scientific illustrator at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China’s top science research institution). His job is to draw plants with perfect scientific accuracy. But his office is not just a place for drawing; it has become a living jungle!
Picture this: you push open his office door, but you don’t see a desk or computer at first. Instead, you see a living green curtain. A Devil’s Ivy plant, which someone had discarded/thrown away, has been rescued by Mr. Sun. He has cared for it so well that its vines have grown all the way up to the ceiling. From there, they stretch across the entire room and hang down the other wall, creating a natural screen. The plant has even wrapped its vines around an avocado tree growing nearby.
And that avocado tree has its own special story. Mr. Sun wasn’t trying to grow a tree. He just thought the avocado pit looked beautiful, so he placed it on his desk to look at. But one day, to his surprise, the pit cracked open, and a tiny green sprout appeared! Since the little plant showed it wanted to live, he planted it in a pot. Now, it has grown into a small tree that is “one person tall.” That’s about as tall as one of us! His small office is filled with these rescued treasures: ferns, spider plants, and even pinecones he found on the ground. He also keeps some small, fragrant fruits called Gouju, which release a wonderful scent when you rub them.
What’s truly special about Sun Yingbao is how he sees the world. He doesn’t just see pretty flowers; he sees scientific mysteries. He has always been curious. He looks at a flower and doesn’t just observe/watch its beauty. He asks questions. “Why is this flower shaped this way? Why does this one have long petals and another have tiny, tube-like petals?” For him, drawing plants is not just art. It’s a way to understand the secrets of nature. He believes that behind every beautiful leaf and petal, there is a scientific reason and a story of survival.
His work is a perfect blend of art and science, a way to create a true and eternal record of nature. He shows us that beauty is everywhere, even in a fallen pinecone or a discarded plant. Sun Yingbao finds stories in things that many people would just walk past.
